Why it matters

What you get

Out of Your Code

Sensitive values never need to be committed. Variables are injected into the container at deploy time.

Hidden by Default

Values are hidden by default. Click to reveal only when needed.

Per-Environment

Set up different variables for dev, staging, and production. No code changes needed.

Set from Your AI Tool

Ask Heli Crew in Claude, ChatGPT or Codex to add or update variables, without opening the dashboard.

Steps

How it works

  1. 01

    Open Variables Tab

In the service dashboard, click the Variables tab to view all environment variables.

  2. 02

    Add Variable

Click Add Variable, enter the key and value. Save and the variable will take effect after redeploy.

  3. 03

    Use in Code

Access variables using process.env.KEY in Node.js or os.environ['KEY'] in Python.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do variables take effect immediately?
Not immediately. After updating variables, the service needs to be redeployed to load the new variables. You can redeploy from the dashboard or ask Heli Crew in your AI tool to do it.
How many variables can I add?
There is no limit on the number of variables. However, avoid storing large data in env vars, use storage or a database for large data.
Can I copy variables between environments?
Yes, you can export and import variables between environments. This feature is available in the Variables tab.
